Can I have a Cancer Genetics Consult during the COVID-19 pandemic

Yes!

We are continuing to support patients and families with cancer in these uncertain times. We have always been able to work remotely and have provided Telehealth consults since 2013. These consults can be carried out to your home.

In summary:

  • Telehealth for rural and regional patients is unchanged and conducted to their referrers rooms or their own home.
  • For Metropolitan patients: you can still be seen at our rooms as usual, unless you are self-isolating. Our rooms at Ultimo are not part of a hospital or large medical practice and we do not share our waiting room, so social-distancing is easy. If you are attending the SAN hospital for treatment, we can see you in our rooms there. These rooms are accessible from the carpark and are separate from the main hospital.
  • For Metropolitan patients who prefer Telehealth to home, this can easily be organised at our usual fees, but without a Medicare rebate. (Note:¬†Unfortunately, the new COVID-19 numbers do not apply to the item numbers 132 and 133 for complex consults that we use at Sydney Cancer Genetics).
  • Many public familial cancer clinics are operating using the new COVID-19 MBS item numbers. If you need to have a bulk billed appointment and live in major city where Sydney Cancer Genetics cannot provide this, you can find your nearest service via our links page.
  • For updated information on who should see a genetic oncologist see this post prepared for doctors. We are happy to see patients who have not had cancer but have a family history as well as patients who do not meet the strict guidelines for testing within a public clinic.
